Biography
As a player, Arthur needs little, if any introduction, his exploits being known the world over, with his colossal 434 League goals a record that could quite easily stand for all time. Born at Wolverhampton, Arthur gained schoolboy honours with his local club and Birmingham and District Schools and even played for Manchester United while still at school. He was an amateur with Man. United, Wolves and W.B.A. Before joining the Army. From W.B.A. he went to Fulham, that season Fulham won promotion as champions. But Arthur was to score most of his goals for Leicester where he gained two more championship medals. <br><br>He then went on to win promotion in his first season with Shrewsbury as player-manager. After occupying the managerial seat at Shrewsbury he moved to Sheffield United in 1968, at Bramall Lane he signed on most of "the first team stars that won promotion to the 1st Division in 1970-71 season.<br><br> Arthur was appointed manager of Southend United in March 1970 and it was his skill, knowledge and guidance plus the 100 per cent efforts of his players that has brought us promotion to Division Three. <br><br>Quote from Arthur Rowley at Southend's Promotion Dinner and Dance, "I am very proud of my players. Arthur is a keen do-it-yourself enthusiast, his other hobbies are golf, cricket and badminton, when he can find any spare time from his duties at Root Hall.
