Biography

Colin Murphy will always be remembered at Southend for his ridiculous programme notes and as the man that brought Stan Collymore to Roots Hall, although he really wanted Steve Jones and it was Vic Jobson refusal to buy Jones that made Colin look again at the Palace reserve winger and buy him.

Despite a number of excellent players in the squad, league results were terrible and the only highlights were watching Stan especially in the FA Cup run which saw Blues reach the 5th round for only the third time. With relegation almost a certainty Murphy was sacked and Vic appointed a non-league manager to try to save the Blues.

Murphy's only other encounter with the Blues took place when some years later as general manager of Notts Co. he persuaded Steve Thompson not to sign as permanent manager with Southend, but join him there.
